Chapter 11: Strange Awakenings

I could feel the sharp, rough stones under me as I awoke in an unfamiliar place. I looked around but I couldn’t tell where my location was due to the very little light that was shining through the hole above. The sun must have been starting to set. Maybe I was in some sort of cave or grotto? Where was I, and how long had I been there? How did I get there? The last thing I remembered was falling in the water, blood, a creature charging at me, and realizing Jason was nowhere to be found. Oh god, where was Jason? Was that his blood? Did that creature attack him and then come for me next? I let out a cough to clear what little water was left in my lungs as I started to pull myself up. I needed to figure out how to get out of here. My mind was racing.

“Maddie, don’t be afraid,” a voice echoed.

That sounded like Jason. Was he there too? That means he is ok too, right?

“Jason, is that you? Where are you?” I asked as I looked around but could see no one else on the little island within the grotto.

“Maddie, you were right. I have been lying to you and I’m sorry. But there was no other way,” Jason’s voice echoed.

No other way? What does that mean? “Jason what are you talking about, and where are you?” I yelled as I started to grow fearful of the situation.

“I will show you, but I need you to have an open mind and try not to be afraid. I have no intent on harming you,” Jason calmly explained. “Can you do that?”

I was silent for a moment. Why would I be afraid of him? Either way, I was trapped, so I didn’t think I had a choice. I took a deep breath and replied, “Yes, I will try.”

I could hear splashing as something started to rise from the water. I took a step towards the sound to get a better look as it rose up enough for the light beaming down to reveal what it was.

“Please don’t be scared, Maddie, it’s still me,” the creature in the water said in a gentle voice.

I froze in place, not from fear, but from confusion. I stood there staring at this creature that claimed to be Jason. Studying it. His face looked almost human, with the exception of his eyes and teeth. His eyes had no pupil or iris, they were both just a solid sea green. His teeth were sharp and jagged like those of a great white shark. His skin was sort of a blue-grey milky color As my eyes followed down, I could see slits on his neck. From the angle of his profile I could see a maroon-colored fin running down his back. My eyes traced down his arms, both upper arms all the way down to where his elbows would have been, were maroon and blue colored fins. The rest of the way down his arms looked lightly scaled.
